Default Submerging the Plate Chiller in Ice Water?

I know it's been discussed, but does submerging the plate chiller in ice water have any effect?

My chiller is pretty hot to the touch, even when the wort output is 58*F.

I usually feed the chiller from a cooler full of ice water with a submersible pump. If I keep the chiller in the ice water, will it help the cooling?

Has anybody ever tested this?

Not to any great extent. That is not how these chillers are designed to operate. Now, running the inlet water through an IC in an ice water bath, then into your chiller, that would have an effect. Is the problem that your water supply is too warm? If you can't lower the temperature of the inlet water, your next best bet is to reduce the flow on the wort side.

The problem is not now, but in the summer, when the hose water is 80*F.

Just trying to come up with ways to cut down on the amount of ice I have to buy.
