Default Sodium metabisulfate made my wine green

So I just mashed up about 25 lbs of muscadine grapes added 6 gallons of water and when I added the sodium metabisulfate (campden tablets) it changed from a pink/red color to a grey greenish color.
Anybody have any input on this?

That's weird. I had a glass of red grape wine and added some metabisulfate to it and the wine turned clear immediately.

Metabisulfite (so2) binds to the pigments in wine so tends to strip colour. The process is reversable so the colour will come back later in the process.
This is why so2 doesn't work as well with red wines, works much better with white.

Tha would explain why my elder wine went a lighter colour when I added campden. It's fine now though - a really rich deep purple.
