A guy in my city let me pick a bunch of hops from a plant he had growing. He said it was there when he moved in and does not brew and has no idea what type they are. Could anyone give me guesses on what they might be? I dont have the leafs to help, and forgot to get a pick of them before the drying process. I was originally thinking cascade since thats the most common but the hops dont have a real citruis smell like cascade. They are more grassy and piney, not a strong smell. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

All from the same plant and a good representation of the whole thing

It's almost impossible to identify hops even in person and looking at leaves and cones. They sometimes have several different shapes and sizes on cones on the same plant, and the leaves can also vary.

A good way to sort of guess what kind they are is to find out the history of the area, and then smell the cones and see what sort of character they have.

In our area, there are wild cluster hops all over the place, as that was what was planted 50-80 years ago.
