Default Northern Brewer Smashing Pumpkin

Just ordered this kit from NB -- had good reviews.

Has anyone tried it?

I will also be brewing this Saturday. Are you planning on adding pumpkin?

Well when I ordered the kit I didn't plan on adding pumpkin so I didn't buy the 6row they suggest you add if you use pumpkin. But after thinking about it I think I'm gonna add about 60 oz of canned pumpkin the last 15 min of the boil to atleast give a little color and extra body.

Just ordered as well. Like browndawg, I also did not include any 6row, but am contemplating adding canned pumpkin to the boil.... just not sure yet. Hopefully others will chime in...

Cheers!

I'm formulating a recipe as well; anyone care to share why they suggest 6 row if you add pumpkin but all 2 row (I assume--for base malt) if not?

I don't know anything about mashing the pumpkin with 6 row, but I did I've got Yuri's Thunderstruck pumpkin ale in primary right now and I boiled 60 oz. of libby's canned pumpkin for the full 60 minutes.

The gravity sample and smell from the airlock are fantastic. If I were doing that kit from NB I'd just add the canned pumpkin right to the boil. It creates a lot of trub, but that stuff doesn't bother me fwiw.

I have this in the secondary right now. I added a can of pumpkin when I did the grains from the extract kit. I'm pretty sure that wasn't right so I just added a little extra pumpkin pie spice at the end.

So far (based on smell and the tastings from my gravity readings) it is more of a spice flavor rather than a pumpkin flavor. If I were to do it again I'd probably caramelize the pumpkin in the oven then add it to the boil. I don't think I will end up with a bad beer but it probably won't be that pumpkin flavor more people think of. Regardless, it should go damn good with my Thanksgiving dinner!

About to go to secondary. I did the partial mash with brew in the bag method. The 6 row is there to help convert pumpkin sugars(doesn't matter if it's canned cause they're already cooked). Going to rack on top if a cinnamon stick and vanilla bean that's soaking in a small amount of JD Honey. Also added some Biscuit, Special Roast and Victory to the mash, 4-6 oz each to be safe. My OG came out 1.078, down to 1.018 after 7 days. S-05 with starter. Stay tuned.
