The yeast seems to have stepped nicely overnight last night, but the starter smells slightly sour. Should I decant and pitch or buy new yeast from the LHBS?
Primary: RIS — Baja Common — Apfelwein

I had a nasty smelling starter a couple of weeks ago...I've never smelled anything like it, but the beer tastes great ! My vote is RDWHAHB

15 gallons of Yellow Bucket Light
~1 gallon of Little Miss Muffet Cider

Fermenter :
12 gallons of Under Pressure Brown Ale
5 gallons of Dead Guyish IPA for a competition

I actually had a couple of nasty smelling starters. Not very foul, but not your normal yeasty stuff. It usually happens just as yeast starts to flocculate. Smell isn't a good indication of what's going on anyway. Taste it and you'll immediately notice if it's ok or not.

Likely okay. Just did a big starter using washed W34/70 and the smell isn't that pleasant (I'm decanting and pitching). Last starter I did with Wyeast 3739 smelled amazing. Unless the smell is positively horrible I don't think you have a problem.
