I made a great IPA the other day. The problem is I don't want to get drunk after 2-3 drinks. Can I reduce everything by 50% and get the same taste?

How can I make a good hoppy IPA with a low gravity?


2 Row Base 12 pounds
Crystal 20L 1 pound

7.7% Hops 1 ounces Chinook hops 13%, Pellet 1 ounce Cascade hops 6%, Pellet 1 ounce Simcoe hops 13%, Pellet 1 ounce Centennial hops

Yeah, APA. I usually don't go past 0.5lb crystal but that's your choice. You can keep it well balanced if you keep your IBUs under 45... I usually go 35ish...

Beer: Palisade pale ale

Type: All grain Size: 5.25 gallons
Color: 8 HCU (~6 SRM)

Bitterness: 51 IBU

OG: 1.054 FG: 1.014

Alcohol: 5.1% v/v (4.0% w/w)


8 lb. American 2-row
2 lb. German Vienna
8 oz. American crystal 40L

Mash 73% efficiency

Boil: 60 minutes SG 1.040 @ 7.0 gallons


1.15 oz. Palisade (8.0% AA, 60 min.)

.25 oz. Palisade (8.0% AA, 30 min.)

.5 oz. Palisade (8.0% AA, 10 min.)

.5 oz. Palisade (8.0% AA, 5 min.)

.5 oz. Palisade (aroma)

.5oz Dry Hop

No!!!! Reduce only the base malt, not the specialty malts. Calculate your BU:GU ratio for the normal version and reduce the hops to match that in the lower OG version. Maybe drop the BU:GU ratio a tiny bit as the hops will stand out more in a lower OG beer.
