Default Airlock with or without lid

I have a 3 piece airlock and I left the lid off because it snaps on pretty tight and figured the air could not escape. Is this correct or should I leave the lid on loose to keep stuff from getting in the liquid?

Duh? A closer look and the lid has little holes in it. Lid snapped on!
