Default Bitterness question

Just a real quick, easy question. How bitter is a beer that has 44 IBU? Is that a lot of bitterness for a standard American Pale Ale?

Thanks!

BJCP says 30-45 is within the range for an American Pale Ale. Not that you need to strictly stay in those guidelines, but yes that's about correct for an American Pale Ale.

try using this......

Dont forget that your water profile will effect how the bitterness is percieved by your tounge.
(its easy to just brew and see how 45 ibu tastes, then pay attention to how 25 tastes etc, this means no water testing and etc etc)

Here is a great chart to help you understand the relationship of the hops to the gravity of your brew
