Default Can I sparge it???

What are my odds of a stuck sparge with this recipe? I use a 10 gallon water cooler with stainless hose. My first version (very good) of this recipe had 20% rye and sparged just fine. Will 28% justify using rice hulls. I would like to avoid the rice as I like to use the spent grain for bread. Thanks

Amount Item Type % or IBU
6 lbs Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 55.81 %
1 lbs 8.0 oz Rye Malt (4.7 SRM) Grain 13.95 %
1 lbs 8.0 oz Rye, Flaked (2.0 SRM) Grain 13.95 %
1 lbs Caramel/Crystal Malt - 20L (20.0 SRM) Grain 9.30 %
8.0 oz Biscuit Malt (23.0 SRM) Grain 4.65 %
4.0 oz Aromatic Malt (26.0 SRM) Grain 2.33 %
0.50 oz Sterling [7.50 %] (60 min) Hops 12.7 IBU
1.00 oz Cascade [5.50 %] Hops -
0.50 oz Cascade [5.50 %] (10 min) Hops 3.4 IBU

Any batch can have a stuck sparge. Just make sure not to mill the grains too fine.

I say you give it a shot as is without the rice hulls.

I'd say you're not going to win either way so why not. If you use them you'll always wonder if you truly did need them, and if you don't you'll kick yourself for not, for me nothing ruins a brewday like stuck sparges!

Will using rye increase the odds of a stuck sparge or is that just rumor?

You can maximize your hull integrity for a given milling size by conditioning the grain before milling it. If you have a spray bottle it costs nothing in terms of equipment, and not very much in terms of time.
