This weekend I'm brewing an IPA with a projected OG of 1.070. It's only a 3 gallon batch (all grain, stovetop), and I'll be using S-05. I've never brewed a gravity this high, and have yet to experiment with yeast starters, but I'm not averse to it.

Question is, is it even necessary for this one?

If unsure about it after all of this, I'll probably just pitch the yeast and see how it attentuates, then pitch more if needed. What would you all do?

What would I do? Use the mrmalty calculator rather than ask a bunch of hungover homebrewers

Ah, yeah, it's good. There's a post on there that answers every basic question you could have about starters, too. Good reading, and a good way to get a grip on starters.

I would more directly say, don't make a starter because S-05 is a dry yeast.

ADD: BTW, Mr Malty calculator has a tab which tells you whether you'd need a second packet of dry yeast. In this case, you don't.
