the 15 gallon Demi-Johns are very fragile apparently --- what other solutions are there for greater than 6.5 gallon glassware?

You could convert a large sanke keg into a fermenter.

Most large Demi-Johns come with a large basket with handles.

you can also consider any of a variety of large plastic containers. While there is some concern about oxygen permeability, you won't be doing long term storage in them so that becomes a non-issue. Here is probably your best bet for that type of fermenter. http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/var...iant%5Fid=8551

I use a 14 gallon Tuff Tank from E. C Krause as a primary fermenter, then two 5 gallon gless carboys for secondary. Works great. I also use the Tuff Tank for bottling.
