Default adding the hot wort to the fermenter?

can I add the hot wort into the fermenter so I can see what level the wort is at? And then cool it in the sink? that way I can also add the cold water from the fridge to top it off at 5 gallons?

thanks

It would be easier to cool the wort to say 100 degrees and then add tap water to bring the wort down to pitching temps. If your doing an extract recipe than you don't need to now the volume in the fermenter before adding the top off water...just top off to 5 gallons.

I too would suggest a water bath to cool the wort down first. Most of the year, your tap water won't get colder than 60F in the dead of winter so you don't need to worry about getting it too cold for pitching. chill it down, pour into primary, top off, and proceed from there.

Could do simple geometry math to figure out the volume, pi exists for a reason.
