Sounds yummy. I made mine with 2-row pale, debittered black (like dehusked carafa), and crystal 90. Next time, I'll add carapils. But the black should help with head retention. 80 IBUs is nice. I was near that. I think you will have a tasty brew!

I'm not really sure the point of the 45 minute and 30 minute addition. I'd move those later in the boil to match up with the later addition. I'd also double if not triple flameout and dry hop.....

I'd ditch the Cara-Pils as you'll have plenty of head retention from the other malts. I'd also change the Carafa II for Carafa III Special.

The 45 and 30 minute additions aren't very useful. Drop them, make up the difference in IBUs with a larger 60 minute addition then beef up the late hops and dry hopping. I'd dry hop with a full 3oz.

Another vote for adjusting your hop schedule. Drop the 45/30 but I wouldn't adjust the 60. More late hop additions and totally up your dry hop to a minimum of 2 oz. I've been playing with my CDA and I'm creeping up towards 4ozs of dry hop.

What are you using for a mash temp? Ive brewed 2 of these CDA's. The first time @ 152 and the second @ 150. I prefered the slightly sweeter higher temp.

This style has had plenty of different names so far, "Black India Pale Ale ( Black IPA)", "Cascadian Dark Ale"...

But the name that the GABF used for their category this year and the one I'll probably stick with is "India Black Ale".

I'm new to brewing and have never had a black ipa or even designed a recipe , but I think the malt looks similar to edwort's pale ale. 3# Vienna? I would swap a pound or 2 for Munich instead for more malty sweetness.

Would malty sweetness be desired in a standard IPA?

Not really, no.

You want a balanced malt backbone but the hops should be the star of the show IMO.

That's what makes a black IPA different from a hoppy stout - there's less of a malt profile however you do still get a hint or roastiness.

Would also love to get some input on my Black IPA recipe. Thanks!

So have you brewed it yet? I just finished a Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale, which I think is somewhat similar but with about 8.7% alcohol, 90 IBUs, Chinook, Amarillo, and Simcoe. It was the best black IPA ever! I'm pretty clear that their dry hopping was off the chart!

Anyway, let us know how yours turned out!
