Wow, that 5 gallon extract kit,, was over $50? It looks like that shop is charging too much for DME, and I've only seen kit prices that high for big IPAs with ~1lb of hops. You might be able to save a lot of money if you shop around.

Thanks NorCalAngler and shuf for the info. I will probably just primary 14 days and then give a good, long bottle condition.

As for the price, it did seem a little high, I think my cost was $53 for everything in the recipe plus a bottle of iodophor (I use that cause it was the preferred sanitizer for cider making. I read a lot of people here use Star San, maybe it's cheaper. I haven't really checked that out). I know that they charged for each of the items individually and gave a 10% discount for making a "kit." Here was my breakdown of cost:

QTY/ Item/ Cost per item/ Total with 10%discount
2 /Muntons Light DME 3lb bag/ $14.99/ $26.99
1 /Belgian Light Candy Sugar/ $4.99/ $4.49
1 /Wyeast 3522 Belgian Ardennes/ $5.99/ $5.99--no discount
1 /One shot Primer Sugar/ $.99/ $.89
1 /Tettnang Pellets 1oz/ $2.09/ $1.88
2 /Hallertau Pellets 1oz/ $2.19/ $3.94
1 /Iodophor 4oz bottle/ $5.09/ $5.09--no discount there of course.

Grand Total: 49.26 +4.58tax=$53.84

Not sure if that's a decent amount, maybe the DME was over priced. I'll have to check that out. As a newbie, I may be over paying. There is another place in town, not sure if the prices are different. I do like the info and friendliness of the staff at this place, so if the prices are similar, I'll probably stick with them for anything I need to run and pick up. Not sure if paying for shipping makes sense. I guess I'll have to look into it for future brews. I'm already looking towards a nut brown from Christmas time, I might check around for that. The LHBS has a nut brown for about the same cost as Northern Brewer's with their $7.99 shipping added in.
Cider and Juice in the Desert...and I occasionally brew beer.

i saw you poured the boiling wort over ice. that's okay to do right? as long as the ice is clean?
anyway to tell which bags of ice are made from water that wouldn't contaminate it?
