im brewing up a sweet stout and im adding a half pound of lactose. do i add that to the boil? at what time?

Any time during the boil. If you compared adding it at 5 and at 60, there would be a very slight reduction in the bittering due to the higher gravity. But, it's down in the noise.

You really only need to boil it long enough to sanitize it, so just toss it in during the last 15 min and you'll be set. You can also add some during your priming boil.

Secondary: Newcastle Clone

I usually add mine in the priming boil so as not to affect my hop schedule during the boil

So is lactose completely unfermentable? Adding a half pound of it wouldn't create a risk of bottle bombs? I'm curious for when I make my next sweet stout, because I had some bottle bomb concerns with my last one. I think I had a lot of unfermentables in that one as well, though.

Lactose will not ferment - that's why it's used to sweeten and add mouthfeel.
