Truthfully, a beer a day does help with milk production... Just sayin'

From page 15 of "Nutrition during lactation" (1991)

"There is no scientific evidence that consumption of alcoholic beverages has a beneficial impact on any aspect of lactation performance."

In Ireland, they give Guiness to new mothers after delivery. I is supposed to help with red blood cell production.

My mother-in-law told me the doctor said she should have a beer a day to help with milk production way back when she had her first kid. I couldn't believe a doctor would say that but hey we are in Wisconsin

Past tense, it's not done anymore. And I suspect it was little more than a smart marketing ploy by Guinness in the first place anyway.

I just sent this to my pregnant wife. I know what she'll say though: "It doesn't say anything about homebrew."

I can see where a beer or two can help a new mother cope with the stress of raising a baby. It can surely help the father as well.

Gotta be careful about alcohol transfer in breast milk for nursing mothers, though. I can't get my wife to have more than a sip or three at dinner. And she's a beer girl, too. She misses it.

I need to brew a tafelbier for her.

Bottling the Belgian: A Photo Odyssey

Beer is the mind-killer. Beer is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my beer. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see it's path. When the beer has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

My sister believed in this whole-heartedly. She drank a bottle of my stout every day (or Guiness in a pinch. I don't know if it helped, but it sure didn't seem to hurt! My wife wouldn't go anywhere near alcohol while nursing.
