I am planning to make Orfy's Hobgolin beer as my first recipe beer (I have done kits up until now). I have identified what I think are the correct grains for this, but I would just like to make sure that I am talking about the correct stuff. I may or may not buy from the sources listed, I am just wanting to make sure that I am on the right track and not totally off my rocker.

-- Steep Specialty Grains
0.17 kg Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM) Grain

0.15 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain

0.09 kg Chocolate Malt (450.0 SRM) Grain

25 gm Styrian Goldings [5.00%] (60 min) (First Wort Hop) Hops

25 gm Fuggles [4.50%] (60 min) (First Wort Hop) Hops

I am also a little unclear on what to do with the specialty grains. I have made kits with specialty grains and they were steeped for xx amount of time in a grain bag before being removed and drained. After that, I added the LME, DME and hops and proceeded with the boil schedule. Orfy's recipe doesn't explicitly say what to do with the specialty grains.

I am really looking forward to this beer! It looks like it is exactly to my "taste"!

I've made that recipe, and it IS really good!

It looks like you've picked the correct ingredients.

You just put the grains in a grain bag and steep for 20-30 minutes. You can add the grain to your pot when it's about 160 degrees, so that you can steep at 150-160 for the entire time. After that, lift the grains out of the pot and allow to drain back into the pot. If you want, you can pour some 170 degree water over the grain bag (it's easiest if the grain bag is in a strainer over your pot) to "rinse" the grain. It's not necessary, but it helps to get all of the goodness out of the grain. Throw away the grains, and bring the resulting liquid to a boil.

Then you can add your extract and bring to a boil again. Add your hops according to the schedule.

All extract beers with steeping grains are done the same way, so you can do that each time.

Either buy the grains milled or put them in a 1 gallon ziplock and crush them with a rolling pin or something.....you just really want to crack the husks, you don't need to pulverize them into flour.

After steeping do not squeeze the bag, just let them drain as Yooper said.

Thanks! Good to know I can at least read an ingredient list properly.
