I have some soda recipes that call for vanilla bean. How well does vanilla extract work instead?

How much extract per vanilla bean? One of my recipe calls for 5 inches of vanilla bean....what would be a comparable amount of extract be? I buy the extract from Costco.

Thanks!

1/2 a bean should be equal to approx. 1 teaspoon of extract, but it really depends on the extract and the freshness of the beans. To me, extract will give the same flavor unless you're using a lot of it.
