Well that went well! I started off by heating my 3.5 gallons of strike water to ~180 and then dumped into the mash tun (converted 10 gal cooler). I let that sit for about 10 min with the top on so the tun could absorb some heat. I then took off the top and let it cool to 166. I then added my grains and stirred. Hit my temp of 154 perfectly. I closed the lid and used a probe digital thermometer stuck into the mash to monitor the temp for the whole 60 min mash. My stayed at 154, toggled to 155 a few times and then dropped to 153 for about the last 10 min of the mash. Very satisfied. During the mash I heated up 5 gal of 180 degree sparge water. I then took off the lid of the mash tun and opened the valve to drain runnings. Of course I vorlaufed a few times till the wort was clear. I drained the wort into my big kettle, collected about 1.5 gallons. I then added 2.5 gallons of sparge water to the mash tun, stirred, vorlaufed and drained again. Then, did this again with the other 2.5 gallons of sparge water. Ended up with about 6.25 gallons of wort. Started my boil on my stove. The wort had cooled to about 150 so it took a little bit to boil, but not really that long at all, maybe 15 min. Boiled for 60 min and ended up with a little more than 5 gallons of wort. Cooled to 75 in about 15 min and transferred to carboy. Aerated and pitched yeast. Total time spent brewing=4.5 hours. I am hooked. Doing an AG batch was a lot easier than I thought and more fun as well. Wort looks and smells delicious and just started fermenting a few hours ago. Can't wait to taste this one. I am doing my first AG tomorrow as well. I think I will adopt the strategy of drinking homebrews until everything seems cool.
