Default Fermentation Question

never had to use a blowoff tube before, always had enough room in the carboy for fermentation to happen. so woke up today with a nice mess in the basement. at this point is it ok for me to switch out the airlock with a blowoff tube or is it better to just wait it out and rack to secondary once fermentation is complete?

you can go ahead and change to a blow off till fermentation calms down then switch back.

If it's still billowing out of the carboy, use the blowoff tube. If is has fallen back and the most active period of fermentation seems over, and airlock is probably ok.

What size carboy is it and how big is your batch?
