Default walnut in beer

I just had a walnut stout at a local brew pub that was awsome. Has anyone ever used walnuts or know when and how to add them?

I'm planning on making a barleywine soon, and it calls for pecans at 15min left in the boil.

Not sure how much it will add to the flavor though....
