Southern Tier from NY has some crazy beers. Not sure if you can get Unibroue in Colorado but those beer are unreal. Unfortunately for Great Lakes and Bell's you have to jump over the border to get these in PA. If he lives anywhere near central NJ have him go to the Buy Rite in South Plainfield. The selection is one of if not the best in the state.

There are also some great Southeastern breweries like Terrapin and Highland. Not sure if they are available in NJ though.

I second Troegs, and would like to add Sly Fox. Good list in this thread so far!

I second this and will add Sweetwater to that list. Highland brewery does make some stellar beer as well. Also Duck Rabbit, "The dark beer specialist" out of Farmville, N.C. I think their Milk Stout is better than Left Hands. The Duck Rabbit also has a Baltic Porter that is apparently rated the #1 Baltic Porter on ratebeer.com FWIW.

Terrapin's great stuff, but I've never seen it around here, nor have I seen Duck Rabbit. :-(

Troegs, Victory, High Point, and Climax are among my favorite local brewers, although Climax isn't in bottles per se, but growlers.

Great lakes is my goto when I go back to Ohio. If you want something that is really unique and that seems to be sweeping the northeast, get shipyard, geary's, or seadog. They're all ringwood breweries and are making great beer.

Ithaca Cascazilla! or their Flower Power IPA are great. Also, the Lake Placid brews are great - try and get the Ubu Ale.

Everyone mentioned the obvious ones but I don't think I saw Flying Fish mentioned. They're a pretty good brewery in Cherry Hill.

If I have to second a few of them I'll second products from Sly Fox, Troegs, Victory, DFH(aren't those pretty widely available?), Clipper City, Smuttynose... just take a trip out here sometime
Fermenting: Flanders Red Ale
Conditioning: Blackberry Mead, Altbier, Cardamom Saison
Kegged: Vanilla Bourbon Porter, Belgian Strong Dark
