I checked my (first ever) brew again today and there is still a thin layer of bubbles/krausen(?) on the surface, even though there is no other apparent activity i.e. no bubbles through the airlock. Does that mean that its still fermenting? Would it be perfectly clear on the surface if its finished?

That layer of krausen will dissolve back into the beer. I would recommend to wait and then ROCK ON
