I'm a bit of a noob so excuse me if this is a dumb question. Does anyone make a brown carboy to keep out light during secondary fermentation. If not, why not? This seems like it would be easier than wrapping a towel around mine every time I move it or look at it.

This indeed has been discussed. Carboys are not manufactured specifically for home brewing. An advantage of a carboy is that you can see whats going on, which brown glass negates. At that point you might as well use a bucket, which is cheaper and less likely to break.

I started brewing 15 years ago and I've never seen a brown carboy either. men's size medium t-shirts fit them well though.

Unless it's sunlight , bahumbug on all other light bashing. I've done more than a few and exposed them to fluorescent and incandescent lighting, without trouble.

:off: :off: really? I have an incandescant in my beer aging room cuz I'm afraid of CFLs. I know for a fact fluorescents emit some UV, since we use them at work for UV environmental testing. I guess it doesn't emit enough to matter though?

Also :off:, if not for homebrewing, what ARE carboys made for??
