Default Threaded fitting and nylon washer

Do I need to use a nylon washer on a threaded ball lock disconnect? It seems the disconnect has a plastic end that the nylon washer does not fit on as nicely as the metal threaded fittings of say the gas distributor.

I've removed the washers from my ball lock disconnects with that plastic piece and they work fine.
