A very odd krauesen has appeared on my stout. It appeared after 1 day and we're now in the 3rd day of fermentation.

This was the second runnings from a RIS parti-gyle brew. The RIS is blowing off like crazy. This one is bubbling away merrily in the airlock, but the surface looks like a lava field with a skin on top. Never seen anything quite like it.

Anyway, I'm not really concerned but I know how we homebrewers like pictures of fermentation porn

That's just a typical ugly a$$ed krauzen...Actually it's kinda pretty like a lunar surface shot.

Know what's funny, as I was bringing in a light so I could take a picture I thought exactly that - I was thinking if I sidelight it, it'll highlight all of the cool features like looking at the moon through a telescope when it's half-full (the full moon washes out all the shadows so you can't see any detail).

Yeah, I was an astronomy and photography dork before a beer dork

And thanks for the not-a-pellicle confirmation. It does look pretty cool slowly boiling away in there.

A pellicle is much more "film-like" than krausen. It's actually sorta deceptive, because after your krausen has fallen, something resembling a pellicle may appear, but its usually actually just trapped CO2.
