Got my prize yesterday, thanks Jaybird!! The scale is sweet, I'm looking forward to not having to measure out a 30# grainbill 3# at a time

My IPA won the IPA category and best of show here in Kentucky, and did fairly mediocre in the HBT competition with several "needs more hops, more bitterness" comments. I think we just kind of like our IPAs more citrusy and floral and less harshly bitter around here, and further west it's more about the bitterness.
The judging wasn't on the west coast...
Its possible you had an unlucky flight placement and your IPA came after Hopinator in which case it probably would have tasted less IPAish in comparison
Flight order can be a bitch! The same bottling and batch run of Hopinator was entered into this competition and won a gold, and in another competition and won a silver. When it took silver it was the 2nd to last beer in the flight and was after the beer that took gold which was an IIPA brewed with 100% homegrown wet chinook cones. Hard to compete with that kind of freshness!

Duh... How quickly I forget.

I still think there is a regional thing, in general, though.

And yeah, flight position is a factor too.

Edit: I brewed up a wet-hopped APA with my home-grown Cascade... it really is quite different than with dried hops.

Hrm...

I opened a bottle of my CA Common last night. It was bottled from the same batch, and at the same time as my HBT entry, and I (nor SWMBO) could taste ANY discernable off-flavors that the judges suggested of my beer. I knew it was awesome in the keg, and thought maybe my bottling process added something, but now I don't think so.

I'll just chalk it up to another lesson learned. The score sheet is not gospel, and judges can be kinder/harder to a beer depending on where they are in the flight.

Also, my ESB was actually scored higher than my Common, but there are many more critical remarks on it's scoresheet than the other category....
