What does IBU stand for, and how does it affect the beer?

P.S. sorry for the lame question, but I'm very new here.

It's a measure of bitterness. The higher the number, the more perceived bitterness (all else being equal, netting out a bunch of other contributing factors).

Here's some good background, along with typical numbers for different styles:

More good background on all this stuff in general is in this free online book:

Rival, ignore them. It stands for "Iaceo Bibo Usus," meaning "Lying down due to drinking is a good skill to have."

Yes, it is a rough translation, but it works.

I'm Balls-Up. Standard term for one who's in an unsightly drunken state.

Secondary: emptyness
Bottled/Fridge: Sierra Nevada Celebration
Bombers/Growlers/Aging: The Abyss, Firestone 19th Anniversary Ale
Kegerator: sanitizer!
Coming Up: something spiffy, most likely
