Can you do an extract oatmeal stout? and if so does any one know a good recipe?

Drank: Amber Ale
Drank: Nessy's 80 Shilling Ale
Bottled: Yellow Paddle Pale ale
Bottled: Ed Wort's Apfelwein
Primary: William Henry Harrison Cider
Planning: Cheese's Vanilla Caramel Cream Ale

Here is the recipe from my lhbs. I've made several of their kits now and have never been unhappy.

7 lb. Amber Malt Extract
1 lb. Dark Dry Malt Extract
lb. Roasted Barley Malt 675L
lb. Black Patent Malt 471L
lb. Chocolate Malt 338 L
1 lb. Flaked Oats
1 oz. Phoenix Hops (Bittering)
1 oz. Willamette Hops (Finishing)
Wyeast # 1099XL Whitbread Ale Yeast

OG 1.062
FG 1.018
5.5% ABV

I can't see how you would do an oatmeal stout without at least steeping grains if not doing a partial mash.

When would the flaked oats go in? End of boil? And I assume that's Amber LME?

There is a samuel smith recipe in the book Clone Brews. I steeped the oatmeal and some malt.

Here is what I brewed, it was great:


1.052 OG, 35 IBU

Amount Item Type % or IBU
5 lbs 12.0 oz Light Dry Extract (8.0 SRM) Dry Extract 77.28 %
8.0 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain 6.72 %
8.0 oz Chocolate Malt (450.0 SRM) Grain 6.72 %
8.0 oz Oats, Flaked (1.0 SRM) Grain 6.72 %
3.0 oz Roasted Barley (300.0 SRM) Grain 2.55 %
2.00 oz Goldings, East Kent [4.30 %] (60 min) Hops 35.5 IBU
1.00 tsp Irish Moss (Boil 10.0 min) Misc
1 Pkgs Irish Ale (Wyeast Labs #1084) [Starter 125 ml] Yeast-Ale

All I did was get a pre-hopped can of stout, 2# of two-row, and 2# of oatmeal. I'm looking forward to drinking my stout with a knife and fork
If you are not growing your own 6th generation barley and hops, you're not *really* homebrewing.

Fermenting: Real Ale, Extract Lager (with WLP830), India Pale Ale

Conditioning: Nothing

Drinking: Pale Ale from the keg
