Since I'm going to be diving into the AG pool, I thought it'd be smart to buy a 50 lb. bag of 2-row base grain. What's the favorte(s) among everyone here? Schreier, Briess, etc.?

My local LHBS has Schreier 2-Row Malt (U.S. 2-row) for about $32 for a 50 lb. bag. I know it will be fresh, because my LHBS is owned by and co-located with a regional microbrewer. And a couple of more experienced homebrewers I recently met have told me so.

Is this a wise choice? If so, what about a second 50 lb. or smaller bag of some secondary base grain? Marris Otter maybe?

Opinions?

It depends on what you are brewing.
M. O. is great in a bitter or IPA, but while it could be a good beer you probably wouldn't want to brew a czech pilsner with it.

debriess carapils is my fav simple malt

I agree with Rookie, Marris Otter 2-row is the best base malt I've ever used. Very consistent, great yeild, great flavor, an all around great malt for most styles. You can get this at North Country Malt (www.northcountrymalt.com) for a great price. Bulk order with your homebrew club and save big bucks on shipping. Our club did a bulk buy about a month ago and ordered over 1700 lbs of grain, shipping turned out to less than 10 cents per pound.

yer right, it's my favorite adjunct

i really like the german pilsner malt the home brew shop carries, i'll have to look up the actual name of it, but it gives a crystal clear gold liquor, it's kinda cool to be able to brew gold beer

Does anyone use 6 row for anything?

I was under the impression 6 row needed to be mashed in a decoction because it wasn't as modified as 2 row was...I've been meaning to research that but haven't gotten around to it....

I don't think that is the case (I could be wrong). I know that 6 row has more enzymes, which means your mash can contain more adjuncts. But it also has more husk material, which detracts from the flavor/mouthfeel (can't remember which one). I think that is the reason its not as widely used. But let me know what your research turns up.
