q 1. I have some old dme that was lumpy, but breaks right up. OK to use in starter?

q 2. can I mix plain light dme and plain amber dme in starter?

q 3. how much dme for 2000 ml starter?

q 4. I can keep starter at 75-76* at my house or upper 60's in neighbor's basement (using a spin plate). who's house gets the starter?

1. It depends on how old that DME is. I believe it has a shelf life...especially if it's been opened previously. I'm not sure how long it lasts as I brew all-grain now and don't keep the stuff around.

2. Yes, you can mix extracts.

3. You'll need about 6oz. of DME for a 2000mL starter.

4. Stir plate takes the deal. Anytime you can make a starter with a stir plate, take the offer. I treat my starters just like I treat my beer. Temps may not be as big of a deal, but why get into nasty habits?

thanks. But either way I use the stir plate. I'm just wondering about temp?

75-76F is fine, just make sure the yeast and the wort are about the same temperature before you pitch.

I use 1 gram DME for every 10Ml of starter wort. Got this info from Jamil and it works great.
