I've got 2 largish insects that are continuously on my Cascade plant, and I'm unsure if they are friend or foe. I definitely have aphids, and have just released a bag of ladybugs on the 4 plants this evening to hopefully combat the problem. (see the other photos in my flickr set for the ladybug invasion)

I am in Chicago, if location might help...

both guys are about the same size, which is about that of a penny, which you can see in the 2nd picture of the 2nd guy, as he's sitting on the twine which is 5/8".

the first guy has the black feet and striped antennae, while the 2nd guy has a bit larger body, longer back legs and antennae.

If anyone knows what they are, please let me know. If they aren't beneficial, then they'll be squashed during tomorrow's watering.

Thanks!

I'm only a few hours away form you in NE Indiana and I've seen the same kind of insect from your first picture around my hops plants. Not sure what it is though....

I believe these are two different species of Katydids. The second one for sure. They are plant eaters, but they usually don't occur in numbers large enough to worry about killing them off.

Ist pic is a katydid nymph (juvenile), the 2nd & 3rd pics are adult katydids. Closely related to grasshoppers & locusts. They eat your crops. Regards, GF.

so the question is, do i let them live, if it's only those 2 bugs?

and i wonder how the hell they found my plants. It's urban Chicago on a roof-top of a 5 floor building.

Just two....... let 'em live. Now if they were Japanese beetles, it's war!
