Racked my Dogfish Head 60 clone to secondary today, and go to add the hops for dry hopping. 0.6 oz of leaf simcoe and 1.1 oz of pellet amarillo. I had decided to use a hop bag, as I wanted to be able to get them out again after 3 days... I had a pair of sanitized tongs I was going to use to poke them down in the neck, and tied a piece of string onto the nylon hop sack so I'd be able to pull it out.
Ha! I could barely even get them into the 5 gallon glass carboy! I ended up having to stuff them down with my hands. They ain't coming back out. Sure hope I didn't contaminate the brew.
So my question is: Is it OK to leave the hops in the secondary for a few weeks, or should I plan on bottling this after it has been dry hopping for three days? And how do other people dry hop? There was no way I was going to get a tea ball in my carboy, and I didn't want the leaf floating around and clogging my siphon when I rack it off.
