Mashed w/1.33qt/lbs of water @ 170f to get my desired mash temp of 156f, hold for 60 minutes, then I did a heat mashout by raising the mash temp to 168f for 10 minutes.
Sparged with 3.87g of water @ 180f.

Started with 7.75g of pre-boil liquid and boiled it vigorously for 90 minutes. Chilled and pitched yeast, fermented at 68f.
After the initial first week of fermentation added my 5oz of dryhops.
Racked off the conical after 38th day of fermentation to a 5g corny keg, did a week of condition at 38f, filtered with a 1 micron filter, then set my PSI to 12.5 and continued to carbonate for a week.

This is my competition IIPA. I'm sending it off to longshot 09 with a few other beers on Monday.

This beer is ****ing awesome, full BJCP style review follows. It is reminiscent of Hop15, Pliny the Elder, and Hop Henge

Appearance: A hazy but clear copper with a finger of thick almost white head that mostly fades but a crown remains, light lacing.

Aroma: Hops hops and more hops. Amazing delicious delicate hops. The simcoe dominates the apparent hoppiness, but you can get a whiff of summit and green bullet as well. Notes of mango and tangerine amidst all the lupulin.

Flavor: Big smooth pleasant hoppy bitterness, showcasing a complex hop flavor profile. There is a subdued complex but deeply rich malt flavor that basically serves as a stage to bring the hops together to do their amazing thing. Big tangerine centric citric hop flavors, a veritable bouquet of hop flavors.

Mouthfeel: Moderate body, good balance but slightly on the dry side, but its fairly thick and heavy in a good way. Pleasantly bitter aftertaste fades to residual hoppy goodness.

Overall: Wow, this is a huge friggen IIPA, hoppy and bitter in all the right ways. With how big this beer is I don't think I can brew it all the time, but it will be a regular brewing for me.

This single beer has been a huge focus for me in the past few months getting it prepared to take on Longshot 09. I did a pilot brew for it (Hopicus, a damn good IPA in its own right) and then basically drank the whole beer with buddies to focus on how to improve it, and I LOVED Hopicus to begin with. The result of the changes to Hopicus were so drastic, its a completely different beer in every way, and thus was born Hopinator.

Longshot starts soon, and I feel sorry for anybody else who has entered Category 14, I'm afraid I've got it locked up.

Well, I guess I was right. Hopinator took best of category 14 in the Sam Adams Western Region. I can't wait to get my tasting notes back.

I received two of these from saq yesterday at the Stone sour beer tasting, and I thought I'd throw up my own tasting notes for this here.

Pours a medium amber with a half inch head which settles down to a thin film, with decent lacing that lasts throughout the pint.

Large hop presence (duh) with a distinct exotic citrus aromas, and lots of passion fruit.

Crisp and dry, but enough malty fullness to ballance it out, not thin like PTE, you can almost feel the hop oils.

Early bitter sting, with a rich citrus and piny hop presence. Slight biscuit/bready tones in the aftertaste and back of the pallet.

Very good IPA, the aroma is outstanding with all of that passionfruit and tropic fruit in there, very enjoyable, I may have to make this beer now.

Thanks FreezeBlade! What you had was batch2, which is a slightly modified streamlined version of the original. I think the grainbill and the mash is perfect and don't think I would change this for batch 3. I think the only alteration in additional batches would be some slight changeup of hops depending upon availability & just random variation, and maybe tweaking the water profile some.

I got my 2009 Longshot sheets back including a nice little certificate that states my Category Winner: IPA Region: Western.
40.5/50 score, not so great judging comments as there weren't any suggestions for improvement. Oh well, I will continue to brew this beer and enter it into competitions!

I just got word that Hopinator batch 1 took 3rd place in the Larimer County Gnarly Barley brew festival for the category of "English & Imperial IPAs" I'm not really sure why they did these crazy custom categorizations, much less why they put English & IIPA together but AIPA separate. Not too shabby considering it was brewed in February!

I took silver in the 2009 Arizona Society of Homebrewers Oktoberfest with Hopinator batch 3. The guy that beat me used 100% homegrown chinook and magnum, I wish I could have tried that beer!
