I overshot my Gravity.

Instead of 5.5 Gallons at 1.036 (Mild Ale), I got 4.5 gallons of 1.042.

Long story short, I tried to fix it at the beginning of the boil and didn't add back enough water. I overshot my previous efficiency by 10 points!

So my question, I have a ton of bottled water -- how much should I add to get to 1.036? Anyone know where I can find the calculation?

****, Right as I posted this it hit me.

4.5 Gallons x 42 = 189 Total Points gravity

189 / 36 = 5.25

So if I top off my water to 5.25 Gallons, I should be good to go-- right?

Thanks guys!

You got it! Now go and sin no more! It would have been best to add the water during the active boil to help insure sanitation, but I've topped off fermenters many times with filtered tap water and it never caused any problems.

At the beginning of the boil I knew I was 7 points high on my gravity and I tried to fix it but didn't add back enough water. Oh well, next time I'll be sure to bump up my efficiency before building a recipe.

I used Dasani bottled water-- hopefully that's cleaner than my tap water.
