Country Music? (McKBrew's musical evolution)

In the late 80's and early 90's I was big into all of the hair bands/hard rock bands of the day. Cinderella, GNR, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Scorpions, etc... As these bands mostly died off, I listened to some of the newer stuff (Offspring, early Green Day, Nirvana and other "newer" bands. As the music changed, I started listening to more classic rock stations just to find the songs I liked. About a year and a half ago, I started listening to country pretty much exclusively. I got tired of all of the politics and "damn the man" music from the newer Green Day albums, White Stripes, etc... (I said politics, so this might have to be moved to the debate forum). Now I am not saying that some country music isn't political, it just tends to agree more with my political views. I like the theme of country music. Small towns, stay out of my business, I don't care what you think, Beer, women, etc...

I guess the point I am getting to by means of a long explanation is that I like country music. I also wondered if anyone else had grown tired of a certain style of music and had experienced a major shift in what they listened to. And lastly, any other country music fans out there? Give me a yee-haw.
 
Well, my roots are in 80's rock....but after going biblical, my mom changed the dial over to the country, so I heard a lot of it growing up. every time I go home to the folks house my mom has it on CMT. All of todays country just sounds like top 40 pop music to me.

The older stuff I recognize, and occasionally there will be a song that I fully recognize, artist and all.....
 
Only the old stuff here- love Johnny Cash. SWMBO's a country fan- so a little sinks in through osmosis (despite my best efforts).

I'm much more into classic bluegrass and roots music- Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, Uncle Josh, etc.

My personal taste in music is wide and varied. I've got Martin Sexton, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, The Tragically Hip going top 3 right now.
 
Started punk rock. I eventually got tired of the same old crap and moved to jazz. That's a socio-economic shift if there ever was one!!!! :mug:

Johnny Cash is the shiznit. When my Grandpa died he gave all of his old records to my Dad, including his Johnny Cash and Hank Willimas collections.....I get them next.
 
I know what you mean...

I grew up on country (with my dad hanging out with his buddies) then the Beatles came along, Motown, Deep Purple, Frigid Pink, The Who, Jim/Jimi/Janis and Woodstock...etc., Aerosmith, Scorpions (I saw them, was less than 2 feet away from them actually, in Germany in 1976 (before they even toured the US)), all the hair bands, etc., but I still listened to "some" C&W.

As for my CD collection: Hendrix rests comfortably close to Jimmy Buffett; K.T. Oslin is stuffed between Kiss and L.A. Guns; and Rodney Crowell leans on either Robin Trower or Roger Waters (The Wall).

Garth Brooks and George Strait are just "peachy fine" living between Frank Zappa and George Thorogood.

I also hear the Eagles and Earth, Wind and Fire are getting along well...as are Abba and AC/CD; and the Beatles and the Bee Gees.

Come to think of it, I haven't heard any bad news from the Rare Earth, Reba McEntire, Red hot Chili Peppers and Reggae 'hood either... :D

Although I must inform you the true "classical" musicians; BEERthoven, "Wolfy" Mozart and company, have been moved out into the southern tiers to dwell with the Christmas CDs.

Everyone has their opinions. I like quite a bit of the new stuff. Toby Keith, Montgomery Gentry. Rascal Flatts tends to get a bit ballady, but when they crank out a true country song I like it.

I'll definately agree that Johnny Cash probably is the pinnacle of country.
 
Its pop with a slide guitar and recycled lyrics. Hell 90% of the popular songs in the 90s were country done Boys 2 Men songs
 
Dammit Mike, If I wanted you to bash country I'd ask for it. I'm about to come up their, pull you outside of your igloo and beat you with a frozen moose leg. I know you guys are way behind the times up their in AK, have you even heard of the Beatles yet. :D

The entire Highway Men group represents the best of country from the 50's thru the 70's! :rockin::rockin: My tastes go all the way back to Leadbelly!

I grew up on old country and whatever came on KASE 101 out of Austin!!

I have branched out to blue grass, jazz, blues, classical, whatever.

Now I am missing the Texas Country scene: Max Stalling, Mark David Manders, James Hand, Wayne "The Train" Hancock, Bleu Edmondson, ..... the list can go on and on.
 
"Modern" country sucks, but I like some real old-school Johnny Cash. Good bluegrass, too; that's my roots. That's the music my old man listened to, that I heard growing up, none of the country-pop crap that dominated country radio (which is completely unlistenable). But, I've got some David Grisham / Jerry Garcia bluegrass stuff that I love, some modern stuff from Neko Case that's decidedly country/bluegrass, I listen to the bluegrass show on the local NPR station most every weekend.

GOOD country/bluegrass music is like good blues music, there's an honesty about it. The bad stuff is horrible, but the *real* stuff is great.
 
I worked country radio for a few years in the early-mid 90's. It was a good time for country. Things have kind of gone downhill for a while in the genre, but there are a good good'uns coming out now and then. My roots were in the 80's hair metal. I was a huge Crue fan around Theatre of Pain time. My tastes expanded after I got into radio and was exposed to more styles. Now I'll listen to most anything so long as it's done well for it's style.
 
Hey Mike, thanks for the Haysee Dixie post. Maybe a joke, but I will bite. Hayseed Dixie ahs a couple of albums that are pretty cool. One is hayseed doing all ACDC songs and it is really good, hearing I got Big Balls by those guys is great. Another is called Kiss My Grass, a bluegrass version of Kiss songs. Good for you head bangers.

I listen to a lot of alternative country, Hank Willams III, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and my current favorite is James McMurtry.

Well, I'm not into country but I dig country derivatives....if that makes since. Like the Reverend Horton Heat (<-----Avatar) and other psycho/rockabilly bands. I'm also on board with Johnny Cash love. Then theres bands like ZZ Top that have definitive country roots but are more rock.

I've noticed something about "modern" country.......the songs seem to stay popular for freakin EVER! With rap and hip hop it seems like there is a new "hit" out every minute (not that I listen to it....) but I worked at a place 3 years ago that played nothing but country and I'm STILL hearing those songs! Idunno, it just seems like they're around for freakin ever....
 
I'm a big fan of country music. That being said, most of what's played on country radio today isn't country. I absolutely hate it! I have to quote Steve Earle "If Garth Brooks is country, I hope the hell I'm not".

I'll tell you what I like. Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, The Louvin Brothers, Jimmy Rogers, Hank Williams, Hank Penny, Bob Wills, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, The Delmore Brothers, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Roy Clark, Waylon Jennings, Roger Miller, Spade Cooley, Tom T. Hall, Webb Pierce, Ernest Tubb, Lefty Frizzell, Hank Thompson, Roy Acuff...

Now THAT's country!

That sounds like my evolution in music....I like both new and old country.

During Harley's 105th I was able to see Sugarland, Joe Nichols, Montgomery Gentry, and the Lost Trailers. It was one hell of a great time!!!
I just got tickets for Trace Adkins, Craig Morgan, Jason Michael Carroll

I got some great pictures of Christian Bush playing guitar on a Harley and some decent pictures of Jennifer Nettles and Joe Nichols.

I like all kinds of music, except hardcore rap and country. If it's got drawling vocals and sliding guitars, count me out.

OTOH - Some of the newer female singers are pretty easy on the eyes. I could watch their videos with the sound turned down.
 
What? No one likes alt-country? No Uncle Tupelo, Old 97s, Sun Volt, Wilco, Whiskeytown, Steve Earle, etc?

I like older country like Cash, Jennings, David Allen Coe, but I also like Dave Alvin and the likes.
 
My sister was a HUGE Old 97's fan when she was in high school (we lived in Ft. Worth) She went to almost every one of their shows.....they're ok IMO :D

I mentioned Neko Case; she's alt-country, or at least has alt-country influences in some of her material. I think I like her stuff better in New Pornographers, though.

Damn Straight! But there is some great new country music out there, you will just never hear it on modern country radio. In the words of Hank III "Pop country really sucks" :rockin:

I am soooooo tired of this bubble gum feel good "remember the good old days" country crap that I could puke. I can't wait till country music experiences what rock went through in the early 90's. A good old fashioned music enema.
