This Mexican market by my house has an 8 gallon steel pot on sale for $16. I was going to grab it but was told that if it's not stainless steel/aluminum I shouldn't use it because it will give the beer a metal taste. I was told to check it with a magnet first. Is that true?

I don't think it would be worth it. At some point its going to rust, even if you do all you can to keep it clean. Try a magnet on it, but if it doesn't stick, it might be plated with something that could give your beer a metallic taste. Its a good deal for such a large pot, but I don't know if I would go steel without it being stainless.

You could use it as a second pot to heat your sparge water with.
