letting your beer set

I'm a bit confused. I like barley wines, tripels etc. They say your to let them set in your secondary for 4-5 months, But if you let them sit longer they get better with time. Do you let them set longer in your secondary. Or do you bottle them and let them sit for another 3 or 4 months They never really say
 
4-5 months in carboy and at least 3-4 months in bottle. I have trouble being this patient but 6 months in bottle always tastes better to me than 4.
