So my wife just splurged and got me a new 13 gallon French oak barrel from Midwest homebrew supply. Do I really need to do the barrelkleen thing or can I just do the water soaks to get the wood to swell before I filler up?

Thinking about doing a stout then maybe an ipa before bugging it up and putting a Flanders in there.

Any suggestions from anyone who has experience with this size barrel would be much appreciated!!!!

I have a friend that is a professional brewer. They get whiskey kegs and usually have them filled in a few days. The philosophy at the brewery he works at is fill it with something high alcohol and you don't have to worry about sanitizing it. I know this is different than your situation, but it's all I got.
