So my buddy gave me his old beer brewing stuff. One of the two fermenting buckets he gave me has a yellow stain and a pretty raunchy smell to it. Is this bucket even worth keeping? What can I do to get rid of the odor? I've got it sitting in a solution of water and bleach. We'll see if that helps.

The water/bleach solution is what I was going to suggest. If that doesn't work, you can find ale pails and better bottles pretty cheap online.

I soak mine in oxyclean. They do have a few stains, but those don't cause any problems. Be careful of scratches- that is where the bacteria hide. If it is all beaten and scratched up, don't risk it. If it is just a little funny smelling and stained, soak it and give it a shot!

Its a pretty common problem if you leave beer in plastic for an extended period.

Clean it thoroughly, and replace it if it is scratched or stained excessively.

Personally, I went to all glass several years ago to avoid this problem.

Cheers,
Brad
