I was reading from a very old brewing book and found that they used to add powdered licorice to build head and improve retention.

Has anyone done this and if so what did you think?

I've used stick licorice in stouts, but for the flavor. Never ran across using it for head retention, but just about everything has ended up in someone's brew.
