I've looked on mrmalty.com and searched these forums and have had no luck with this question (I just hope I wasn't blind when I was looking).
When making a starter for a specific target size, ie 1 liter or 1.25 liters (etc) according to mrmalty.com, to what does the size refer? Does the size include the yeast and slurry or just the size of the yeast that has settled to the bottom?
For example, according to the pitch rate calculator, I need 1 liter of starter for a beer. When I make this starter with DME, do I mix up 1 liter total of DME/boiled water and my activated pack of Wyeast (of course waiting to cool and then allowing the starter to ferment for 1-2 days)?
