I've never made a recipe before, but I've been fascinated by rye IPA's ever since trying Sierra Nevada's Ruthless Rye, and I keep seeing Denny's Rye IPA touted--so I thought I'd try it. Unfortunately it's an all-grain recipe, and I haven't graduated to that yet.

I looked around on the intarwebs, thinking somebody surely had converted this by now. BeerSmith doesn't help, since Northern Brewer's rye malt is so new. So, I thought I'd take a stab at it. Anyone want to critique?

Malt
  • 12 lbs. Northern Brewer Rye Malt LME (70% 2-row, 20% rye, 10% caramel 40)
  • 1.00 lbs 2-row pale malt
  • 0.50 lbs cara-pils/dextrine
  • 0.50 lbs flaked wheat

Hops
  • 1.00 oz Mt. Hood (FWH)
  • 1.00 oz Columbus/Tomahawk (60 min.)
  • 0.50 oz Mt. Hood (30 min.)
  • 1.50 oz Mt. Hood (1 min.)
  • 1.00 oz Columbus/Tomahawk (dry hop 3 days)

Other
  • 1.00 Tsp Gypsum Other 60 Min.(boil)
  • whirlfloc tablet (15 min.)

Yeast
  • BrewTek CL-50 California Pub Brewery Ale or Wyeast 1272 Am. ale II

Well dang! From Northern Brewer, I assume (since I haven't seen any other rye malt extracts)?

...wow, the grain bill is totally different. Thanks for pointing this out!
