Well, thank you everyone for all your help in my numerous recent posts. I decided to make up my own stout using my "homebrew formulator" program. I have always liked being creative so the idea of brewing someone else's kit/recipe hasn't interested me much. Well, here is my final recipe thats bubbleing away in the primary. I am curious to see what you guys think.

Fermentables
:D
6.5lbs light LME
.5lbs Crystal 40
.5lbs Black Patent
.5lbs Chocolate
.5lbs Roasted Barley
.25lbs special B
.25lbs Cara-Red
.25lbs Oats
.5lbs Brown Sugar

Hops

.75 oz. Northern Brewer 60 min.
.75 oz. Hallertauer 15 min.

Irish Moss 15 min.

Yeast

Safale T-58

I.B.U. - 40
S.R.M. - 49

I hope you guys think it sounds good. I just thought I'd expirament. Live and learn I guess. This will be my fourth ever batch, and all my previous batches have been great! This is my first self designed recipe though. I know the grain bill is crazy, but I thought it looked good.:D

.5lbs Black Patent - Unless you like charcoal, I'd cut this to 4 oz. Otherwise, it looks fine.

Just in case you guys are interested, I brewed this a week ago and just finished transferring it to my secondary. My housemates and I tried some and it is already everyone's favorite beer. It is very good, not very bitter, but It has a nice dry finish and has a coffee-like aftertaste. I can't wait to see how it'll be in a few weeks!

.5 lbs of Black Patent!!

Wow! I don't know if I could handle that.

BTW, Black Patent is not a traditional ingredient in stouts. That stuff was traditionally used in Porters.

To each his own, but my own tastes can't handle quite that amount of Black Patent. Even my porters only have 4 oz at the most.

The recipe I just bottled (Oatmeal stout) called for 1/2 lb of Black Patent.
It's been a popular kit at my LHBS.

7lb John Bull Amber Malt Extract
1 lb M&F Amber dry Malt Extract
½ lb M&F Roasted Barley Malt 675 L
½ lb M&F Black Patent Malt 471 L
½ lb Chocolate Malt 338 L
1 lb Flaked oats
1 oz. Yakima Magnum Hops (bittering) 60 min.
1 oz. Fuggles (finishing) 58 mins.
Wyeast # 1099XL Whitebread Ale yeast
