The idea is good. I'm not so sure about the thermometer.
It's a POS, but long enough to reach the beer.
I epoxied a piece of 3/8 OD copper tubing onto the bottom one.

Even if the probe doesn't reach the beer, just getting the temp inside the fermenter would be an improvement over what I'm doing now. Right now I have an indoor/outdoor thermometer with the outdoor sensor sitting on the lid of my bucket. That way I can see the temp from the indoor part in the living room.
