when i do a secondary fermentation im guessing i need to put an airlock on my carboy? im new to this. so any advice would be helpful!

Yes, you use an airlock as long as it is in a fermenter--primary, secondary or tertiary.

Are you using a secondary for a specific reason?
Yes, you would want an airlock.

Always use an airlock -- it keeps the baddies (or goodies, if you want wild yeasts) out.

I only use a secondary for adding fruit or if there are a large amount of hops and trub remaining and I want to use a secondary to dry hop.
It increases the risk of infection and oxidation and I don't believe its necessary otherwise.

I'm doing an extract with specialty grain imperial Stout, the instructions call for 2-3 months in secondary
