**Update** 8/18/2009- This beer just took first place out of 18 in the First Annual Bee Cave Brewery Big Brew Bash with a score of 43.3. Edwort was kind enough to host this friendly HBT competition.

**Update** 7/20/2009- Just got my NHC final round scores in the mail today. This beer got pushed to the mini best of show in Cat.14 with scores of 40 and 36. The final assigned score was 38. I won't note all of the comments from the two judges, but I will list the overall impressions they gave of this beer. I plan on tweaking this recipe slightly according to some of the comments that were given and will update this recipe further once I re-brew/sample it.

Final Round Overall Impressions:

Judge #1 (40): Drinkability-"Please send me the recipe". Comments- "A very nice brew!"

Judge #2 (36): Drinkability-"I would pay money for this beer." Comments- "Clean style expression and malt complexity."

This beer placed 2nd in the first round, Great Lakes Region of NHC 2009, Category 14 India Pale Ale (IPA)- 14B, with a score of 39. This recipe was inspired by one of my favorites in the HBT database “Dude’s LakeWalk APA”.

A strong citrus/floral aroma. Nice citrus punch with a balanced malt backbone. Hint of sweetness followed by a slight bitterness that disappears into a clean and crisp finish.

I have brewed this 5 times now trying to dial in a flavor profile that really appeals to my personal preferences.

I like the look of this recipe. What does the Vienna add to this recipe aside from color? Body? I have never used vienna in an IPA and it intrigues me.

Aside from color and body, Vienna adds to the malt profile. Not the malty sweetness that you would get from munich. It also has a slightly toasted/biscuit flavor, IMO.

I'm going to brew this weekend....I can't wait.:mug:

I'll be brewing a batch this weekend as well. I might up it to 10gal since five never seems to last me more then two weeks.

I'm curious as to why put two caramal malts in there? Is the 120 just for darker color or foes it add flavour as well?

each and every degree of color in the caramel malt line tastes differently.

If you want to find out yourself, make a tea out of 10L, 40L 60L, 90L 120L and try each. It will give you a good idea of what each tastes like. Also, you could just chew some.

The 120L adds a subtle complexity to the flavor, which was my intent after tasting the very first batch with just the 60L in the grain bill.

That looks like a killer IPA! One of my favorites uses Simcoe and Amarillo. Founders Double Trouble IIPA!

I had ordered a pound of Amarillo from the hops direct sale. I might have to order another of Simcoe!

Thanks I think i'll try that. At least with the 10 and 40 i've got.

Have you tried Wyeast 1272 with this recipe?

1272
With many of the best qualities that brewers look for when brewing American styles of beer, this strain’s performance is consistent and it makes great beer. Fruitier and more flocculent than Wyeast 1056 American Ale yeast, slightly nutty, soft, clean with a slightly tart finish. Ferment at warmer temperatures to accentuate hop character with intense fruitiness, or ferment cool for clean, light citrus character. Expect good attenuation, but this will vary with grist makeup, mashing protocol, or other wort characteristics. Reliably flocculent, producing bright beer without filtration.

Origin:
Flocculation: High
Attenuation: 72-76%
Temperature Range: 60-72F, 15-22C
Alcohol Tolerance: 10% ABV

I haven't brewed this one yet (I will soon though!), but I have brewed several Amarillo IPAs with Bell's ale yeast, which I am fairly sure is very similar to 1272, if it's not in fact 1272. I think it's great with Amarillo...the fruitiness of the yeast complements the flavor nicely.

Mustangj, I haven't tried wyeast 1272 with this recipe yet. But I have used wlp051. The wlp051 has gone very well with this recipe. So far I have used wlp001, wlp002, wlp004, wlp007, wlp013, wlp023, wlp051, notty and S-04.

The last two times that I brewed 10gal of this recipe, I pitched wlp001 in one fermenter and a wlp023 in the other. I will have to try the wyeast 1272 for comparison.

Just ordered the grain bill for a batch of this recipe, yesterday.

I bumped it up to about 8% abv but otherwise left everything the same.

I'll be using my home-grown Cascades in this...really looking forward to it!

Cool..Thanks for the info. I need to have this ready for the summer.

Just brewed S&A last weekend to bring up to yoopers brew day in July.

I have made a few changes to the recipe over the past year. The only other change I make is to rotate hop varieties at the 10min addition each time I brew it. I will rotate the 10min using either Amarillo, Citra, Columbus or Simcoe.
