I'm planning a chocolate-coconut porter for the near future, have drawn up a rough recipe but would love to know your opinions on it.

84% 4.5Kg British Pale (Maris Otter)
7% 400g Chocolate Malt
5% 285g Crystal 90L
4% 200g Flaked Oats

30g Northern Brewer 10.5%AA @60 min
30g Fuggles 3.8%AA @1 min

Wyeast British Ale II (1335)
Estimated OG: 1.060
IBU: 35

200g of Cocoa nibs in secondary
350g of Totasted Coconut in Secondary

So what do you guys think? I wanted to keep the grain bill relatively simple, maybe a tad high on the chocolate which could contribute some harshness. I've got some fuggles left over hence the 1 minute addition, figured in would impart something good anyway.

Cheers!
G

Sounds pretty tasty to me. I might back down on the hops though. Chocolate tends to add some bitterness of its own, and I think you've got enough aromatics at play without the fuggles. Otherwise looks perfect, good luck.

Guys, this might be a stupid question but: This is an all grain recipe right?

Would anyone be willing to convert to extract for me? Pretty please?

Can you steep grain? If yes then Beersmith conversion says

7 lbs 8.2 oz Light Dry Extract (8.0 SRM)

Steep
10.0 oz Chocolate Malt (450.0 SRM)
5.7 oz Carafoam (2.0 SRM)
7.2 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 80L (80.0 SRM)

Continue with the rest of the OPs recipe

That'll work just fine once i convert the grams to oz's.

Thanks Bithead! I'll be brewing this one up sometime next week i think.

Looks good. Be prepared to tweak the chocolate/coconut balance with some alcohol extractions (made or purchased) at packaging.

Personally I would replace 400 grams of chocolate malt with about 275 each of chocolate and pale chocolate (eg simpson's). The equal parts chocolate and pale chocolate thing was something I noticed in a few of Jamil Z's recipes and I do it a lot.

This recipe in Brewpal comes out to about 6 gallons pre-boil wort. Is that what you came up with Graeme?

For those of you who are interested in the Imperial conversion numbers:

10lbs Marris Otter
.71lbs Chocolate
.62lbs Crystal 90L
.44lbs Oats (flaked)
1oz NB hops

Brewpal calls for 2 packs of liquid yeast with the called for strand but i think that's a bit high. (239 billion cells seems extraordinarily high for anything i've ever heard of but i may be reading it wrong)

Looks like 4.4 gallons @ 171 for strike water and 3.7 gallons @ 176 for sparge
