oak barrel vs oak chips

Ok, can one get the same flavoring from adding oak chips to a carboy as can be obtained through oak barrel storage?

I haven't tried comparing the two so keep that in mind with my response...oak barrels let in way more oxygen than a glass carboy would so that is the biggest difference I can see over time. Oak chips are available in all the oak types as barrels with all the different roast levels so I would think you could get almost the same flavor characteristic. I like using cubes for the ease of control over the oakiness.
