I've found that it is nice to have, but I wouldn't say you need it

I've recommended it to a couple friends that started brewing. They are all happy with it. Even if you are going to upgrade to a keggle or something of that nature later, this is a very good, inexpensive pot to start out with.

I used that exact same kettle for my first batch of homebrew last night! Worked great. I used aluminum foil to cover it and help bring up to boil faster when I did my conditioning and brewing. Overall I feel like its a good product for the price.
